Evangeline Engwall

My Story

At just seven years old, our daughter Evangeline was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma in

May 2024. What followed was a journey no child should ever have to face, but one she

met with a strength that has redefined heroism for our family.

Her fight began with a grueling 13-hour surgery at Comer Children's Hospital, where the

brilliant Dr. Grace Mac removed 50% of her liver and her gallbladder. Just ten days later,

she began six rounds of intense chemotherapy at Advocate Children's Hospital. The

cocktail of drugs—Cisplatin, Doxorubicin, Florocil, Vincristine—came with immense

challenges: fevers that led to hospital stays, difficulties with eating, and kidneys that

were pushed to their limits. A terrifying moment came with an emergency brain MRI, a

fear we wouldn't wish on anyone.Through it all, Eva found her heroes. Kevynne,

her child life specialist, and Dr. Siddiqui,a calming presence who consistently consulted

with other oncologists, were pillars of support who helped us navigate the scary

unknowns. They, along with so many others, consistently calmed our nerves and

brought light to the darkest days.

There were many tears shed for the loss of a normal childhood, but there were also

countless moments of fierce joy and unbreakable spirit. Evangeline’s ability to handle

her port care and the litany of procedures and scans with such bravery has become our

family's mantra: "If Eva can handle this, so can we!"

We were so touched by the mission of Hope for Warriors because we recognized that

these tiny cancer patients are truly kicking ass. The thoughtful cheer you provided gave

us a lasting sense of hope. Now, we want to honor our Evangeline, who, like Hopie,

embodies persistent positivity and the truth that keeping your head up is the key to this

battle. She is a warrior, a survivor, and our greatest hero.
